From Hero to Host: A Journey to Re-Imagining Leadership.
This is the story of a school superintendent who proposes to the Board of Trustees, in her employment interview, that a rural context is not an excuse for poor student achievement results. She suggests, based on in-depth leadership research that a reimagined leadership development program focused on strategic capacity building, positively changes students’ learning experiences and high stakes performance results.
Over a two year period, the Superintendent and her colleagues, Deputy Superintendent Karen Shipka, and Circle Practitioner/Facilitator Katharine Weinmann, have brought this proposal to life, creating incredible, data supported, learning shifts through their reimagined school leadership development approach.
Margaret Wheatley’s 2010 article, Leadership in the Age of Complexity: From Hero to Host is the metaphor that underpins this narrative fostering the idea of hosting conversations versus taking the role of hero.   We hope our story will resonate with you as you engage in your own culture shift.
